Rosedene’s own, Chantelle, joined us seven years ago in 2019 as an Early Years apprentice. Today, she is the Deputy Manager at our newly opened Rosedene Stokesley Forest School & Day Nursery. In this blog, Chantelle reflects on the experiences, challenges, and opportunities that shaped her career.

1. What first attracted you to starting your apprenticeship at Rosedene, and how did that decision shape your career journey?
I was first attracted to Rosedene because it offered a supportive place to learn while gaining real hands‑on experience. I wanted to build my skills in early years, and I felt Rosedene would give me the opportunity to grow. That decision set the foundation for my career - I’ve now worked across our Egglescliffe, Hardwick, Redhill and Stokesley settings, gaining confidence, leadership experience, and a clear understanding that early years is the right path for me. I’m now a room leader and deputy, and the apprenticeship is what started it all.
2. What was the most valuable lesson you learned during your apprenticeship?
The most valuable lesson I learned was the importance of developing strong relationships with children, families, and colleagues. Understanding each child as an individual and working as part of a supportive team made a huge difference to how I approached my role. This still guides me today in leadership, communication, and supporting the children in my care.

3. Can you share a challenge you faced during training, and how Rosedene supported you?
One of my biggest challenges was building confidence when working with different age groups and taking on new responsibilities. The team around me made all the difference. They offered guidance, reassurance, and constructive feedback. That support helped me grow quickly, build my confidence, and become the practitioner and leader I am now.
4. What opportunities helped you progress from apprentice to deputy?
I was given a lot of opportunities throughout my apprenticeship, which helped me develop at every stage. Working with different age groups helped me understand children’s development, and being supported by experienced staff allowed me to learn from their practice. I gradually began taking on leadership tasks, gained confidence through feedback, and completed additional training. All these experiences helped me move from apprentice to room leader and now deputy.

5.What advice would you give to current Rosedene apprentices?
My advice would be to stay open to learning and make the most of every opportunity. Ask questions, take feedback on board, and don’t be afraid to try things that challenge you. Building strong relationships and being reliable go a long way. Progression takes time, but if you’re committed and consistent, you can move from apprentice to room leader and beyond.
6. How has starting as an apprentice shaped the leader you are today?
Starting as an apprentice taught me the value of relationships, teamwork, and consistency. Getting to know my children and families helped me understand their individual needs, which shaped my approach. Those early experiences built my confidence and leadership skills and helped me become a caring and reliable leader who always puts children first.

Chantelle’s journey from apprentice to Deputy Manager shows how practical experience, supportive teams, and ongoing development can lead to steady progression in early years. Her progression highlights the strength of Rosedene’s apprenticeship pathway and how it equips practitioners with the skills needed for confident, effective leadership.
