The Power of Community in Early Years Learning

At Rosedene Nurseries, we know that some of the best learning happens beyond the nursery walls. Children are naturally curious about the world around them, the people they meet, the places they visit, and the helpers they see in their community.
That is why community partnerships are such an important part of our curriculum at Rosedene. Across our nurseries in Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, North Yorkshire, Redcar and Cleveland, each setting builds its own special local partnerships, helping children enjoy real-life experiences that build confidence, spark curiosity, and support their learning journey in meaningful ways.
This month, as we focus on the theme of community, we are celebrating the wonderful people, places, and organisations that help bring learning to life for our children every single day.
Learning Through Real Experiences
Community partnerships give children the chance to see, hear, touch, ask questions, and explore. These experiences help children understand the world in a way that feels exciting, meaningful, and memorable.
Whether it is a visit from a firefighter, a trip to the local library, meeting healthcare professionals, or spending time with care home residents, these experiences support language, confidence, kindness, independence, and imagination — all while helping children feel part of something bigger.
Across our nurseries, children regularly explore their local communities through walks, visits, visitors, and hands-on experiences that connect learning to real life.
Special Friendships With Care Homes
Many of our nurseries have wonderful partnerships with local care homes, creating meaningful intergenerational experiences for both children and residents.
Through activities such as singing sessions, storytelling, crafts, baking, gardening, and seasonal celebrations, children and residents have the opportunity to build genuine friendships and connections. We have seen amazing outcomes from these partnerships, with children growing in confidence, communication, empathy, and understanding, while residents benefit from companionship, joy, and opportunities to reminisce and engage.
These experiences teach children that friendships can happen at any age and help nurture kindness, patience, and respect for others. The smiles shared between generations truly show the power of community connections.

Adventures at the Library
At Rosedene, we love collaborating with our local libraries and introducing children to these wonderful gems within their community.
Many of our nurseries enjoy regular library trips where children can explore books, join story sessions, discover new authors, and develop a love for reading in a calm and exciting environment. These visits help children understand that books and stories can be enjoyed beyond nursery and encourage families to continue reading together at home.
Library visits also play an important role in supporting early literacy, language development, listening skills, and confidence, while helping children become familiar with local community spaces and routines.

Healthy Smiles With Dentists
Some of our nurseries work closely with local dental practices, particularly during awareness events such as Oral Health Day, helping children learn about oral hygiene in fun and engaging ways.
Children may visit their local dentist to explore the environment, meet dental professionals, sit in the dental chair, and talk about what happens during check-ups. These experiences help make visiting the dentist feel less unfamiliar and can ease worries children may have.
Alongside this, children learn about brushing teeth, healthy eating choices, and the importance of looking after their smiles through activities, role play, stories, and discussions.

Learning About Health With GPs and Nurses
Our partnerships with local GP surgeries and healthcare professionals also help children learn about keeping themselves healthy and understanding the important roles doctors and nurses play within the community.
Some nurseries visit local GP surgeries to explore what happens during appointments and to help children feel more confident about visiting the doctor. We also work with local nurses who come into nursery to talk to children about their health, wellbeing, hygiene, and how we can care for our bodies.
These experiences encourage children to ask questions, explore healthcare through role play, and develop confidence around medical environments and routines in a reassuring and child-friendly way.

Working Together With Family Hubs
Some of our nursery settings are based alongside family hubs, allowing us to build particularly close relationships that help support both children and families in collaboration.
By working closely together, we can help families access valuable advice, guidance, activities, and support services within their local community. These partnerships strengthen the connection between nursery, home, and wider support networks, ensuring children and parents feel supported every step of the way.
When families feel connected and supported, children benefit too - helping to create a strong sense of belonging, wellbeing, and security.

Meeting Police Officers and Firefighters
Children are often fascinated by emergency services, and we love welcoming local police officers and firefighters into our nurseries to meet the children and share their important roles within the community.
These visits give children exciting opportunities to explore fire engines and police cars, try on uniforms, ask questions, and learn important safety messages in an engaging and memorable way. Firefighters often talk to children about fire safety and emergencies, while police officers help children understand how they keep communities safe and who they can turn to for help.
These experiences often inspire imaginative role play, storytelling, curiosity, and future aspirations, while also teaching children valuable life skills around safety and community awareness.

Helping Children Feel Part of Their Community
At Rosedene, community partnerships are more than special visits or one-off activities, they are an important part of how we help children learn about the world around them.
By meeting local people and exploring local places, children across Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, North Yorkshire, Redcar and Cleveland develop confidence, curiosity, respect, and a strong sense of belonging. They begin to understand that they are an important part of their community and that their community is full of people who help, care, support, and inspire.
Every Rosedene nursery has its own unique partnerships and community connections, each helping to create meaningful learning experiences and lasting memories for our children.
Explore our community partnerships page to discover the magic of these connections through our nursery stories and testimonials.
Because at Rosedene, community is not just something we talk about - it is something our children experience, enjoy, and grow from every day.
