Creating Safe Sleep Spaces for Babies – Safer Sleep Week 2026

From 9-15 March 2026, The Lullaby Trust is raising awareness during Safer Sleep Week, a national campaign focused on helping parents and caregivers reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
This year’s theme is “baby necessities”, highlighting the simple essentials babies need for a safe sleep environment. The key message is simple: keep it simple to keep it safe.
The safest cot for a baby is a clear cot. Babies only need two things in their cot:
A firm, flat, waterproof mattress
Lightweight bedding
Items such as toys, blankets or cot bumpers should be removed, as they could cover a baby’s face and affect their breathing.
Simple Safer Sleep Tips
Following guidance from The Lullaby Trust can help keep babies safe while they sleep:
Always place babies on their back to sleep
Use the feet-to-foot position in the cot
Keep the cot clear of unnecessary items
Ensure babies don’t get too hot
Keep babies smoke-free
Sleep babies in the same room as you for at least the first six months
Safer Sleep at Rosedene Nurseries

At Rosedene Nurseries, the safety and wellbeing of every baby in our care is our priority. Our trained practitioners follow safer sleep guidance by creating clear sleep spaces, placing babies on their backs to sleep, regularly monitoring sleeping babies, and ensuring rooms remain at a comfortable temperature. Most of our Rosedene Early Years Educators have also completed safer sleep training
through Noodle to ensure they are following the latest guidance. Practitioners carry out sleep checks every 10 minutes, getting down to the child’s level to physically observe the rise and fall of their chest to ensure they are breathing safely.
We also work closely with parents to support safe sleep routines both at nursery and at home.
For further advice and guidance, families can visit The Lullaby Trust or download the Children’s Health Services App, which includes helpful information in the Safe Sleep section.
Together, by following simple steps, we can help ensure babies sleep safely and soundly.
